Marketers have been asking this question for months. Is AI traffic worth worrying about? Is it more valuable than organic SEO traffic?
Our short answer, based on client data and the latest industry studies, is yes, the average AI visit is often worth more than the average Google visit, although the full picture has a few wrinkles.
Let’s unpack the data, the real-world experience, and the “why” behind the trend.
The surge in AI referrals
- AI traffic is rising fast. Semrush projects that visits coming from AI search experiences (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, etc.) will overtake classic organic search visits by 2028 if current momentum holds.
- Practitioners are seeing it on the ground. TravelAI CEO John Lyotier shared that referrals from ChatGPT to his 20 travel brands are compounding at about fifteen percent week over week, with volume on track to grow 7× by late summer.
What the numbers say about value
Not only is traffic rising, early data is consistently showing that is is more valuable.
| Source | Claimed lift vs. traditional SEO | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Our client (B2B SaaS) | 2× higher conversion rate | Internal analytics, Jan–May 2025. Read our case study. |
| Semrush study | 4.4× higher revenue per visit | 500 marketing topics, Jun 2025. |
| TravelAI data | ≈3× higher conversion rate | 20 consumer-travel brands, Jun 2025. |

Why AI visitors are often warmer leads
- LLMs do the comparison shopping for users. By the time someone clicks a link inside ChatGPT or another AI panel, they have already asked follow-up questions, vetted options, and narrowed intent. They arrive pre-qualified and closer to purchase.
- Higher trust levels. Users perceive answers from ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overview as recommendations, not just search results. That social-proof vibe boosts confidence and action rates.
- Reduced friction. Conversational answers summarize specs and pricing inline, so visitors land on a site needing only the final details or a checkout button.
Those factors also explain why bounce rates can look different. Digital Marketing Desk found that AI visitors bounce 4 percent more often and view fewer pages, but they still converted about 12 percent better than search traffic overall. Fewer page views are not always a bad sign when the visitor has already done their research in-chat. A “bounce” can happen simply because somebody only viewed one page on a site, not because they didn’t get what they wanted.
Caveats to keep in mind
- Engagement isn’t the same as depth. If your business relies on ad impressions or multi-page journeys, the shorter visits typical of AI referrals might cut into downstream revenue. It is always something you should be testing.
- Attribution is messy. Many AI platforms strip or mask the referrer. Expect some portion of “direct” traffic in analytics to be AI-assisted.
- The channel is young. Volume is still small for most brands. A higher conversion rate on a tiny base may not move topline numbers yet, but growth curves suggest that could change quickly.
How to capitalize on high-value AI traffic
- Add GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) fundamentals to your SEO playbook. Clear, quotable copy blocks and machine-readable facts make it easier for LLMs to cite you.
- Seed trusted third-party content. Quora, Reddit, and niche expert sites are heavily cited in AI responses. Strategic contributions there can funnel warm clicks.
- Publish structured comparisons and FAQs. These answer-ready chunks get lifted verbatim into chat answers, positioning your brand as the final step.
- Track the channel separately. In GA4, build custom channel groupings for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Bing AI, and others so you can benchmark conversion and LTV. Pace Generative’s AI Visibility Dashboard automates this tagging if you want a shortcut.
So, is AI traffic “worth more”?
For many brands the evidence already points to yes: AI referrals convert two to four times better on a per-visitor basis and pull buyers further down the funnel before they ever hit your site. Treat the channel as additive to SEO, not a replacement, and start optimizing for both today.
